lebrun, bobby mac, dregs, etc, etc, all have connected kapanen as being sought after by multiple teams with defensemen to spare.  he would be the centerpiece coming from the leafs with possible other supporting pieces.  they don't usually name specific names, but we all know the possibilities.   every insider has tied kapanen to every team that has sought to make a deal with the leafs, AND have *all* expressed the idea that kapanen has high value league wide.

Marner multiple times this season after poor performances has talked about how he wasn't into it that game. The fact he wasn't ready for Game 1 after 5 months off is mind-boggling.

I understand the vitriol, but "not engaged" can mean different things to different people.

I'm not convinced it meant he "wasn't trying" or "didn't care". You don't get to the NHL by not caring.

And ya. I'd do Marner for Jones straight across. Not because of anything Marner has said or done but because leafs need a guy like Jones more than they need a Marner with the current team makeup.

Listen, a Marner for Jones (which will never happen) would provide the Leafs with a badly needed piece, but let's not fool ourselves, that would only be the beginning of a solution. The Leafs need a lot more than that.

Every team would, because every team does, regardless of their make up.  Legit #1 D are far more valuable and hard to acquire than first line wingers, especially assist heavy wingers, no matter how good they are at setting guys up.

It would be nice if one (or both) of the dmen they took in the first round the last couple of years actually blossomed into a top 4 dman.

Curious to see if anyone agrees with this.

Not sure that I do.  The only guys currently on the leafs that play with grit are Hyman and Muzzin.  Safe to say they’ve played that way since joining the league.   The closest I could get was Kapanen for about 2 1/2 weeks this season before the shutdown.  Looked like he was showing signs of adding that element, but the playoff no-show would seem to douse that notion.  

Couldnt really come up with any past leafs that “became” gritty players, either.

Can you actually develop grit?
